Open carry is lawful in North Carolina without a permit, but as of September 2026 concealed carry still requires a concealed handgun permit. Permits are issued by the Wake County Sheriff to residents 21 and over who complete an approved course. Schools, courthouses, state buildings, assemblies where admission is charged and posted property are off limits.
